Humanitarian assistance programme for indigenous and Afro-Colombian populations affected by floods in the Buenaventura municipality in Colombia. The heavy rainfall which began during the last weeks of November 2010, generated a substantial rise in flow rate of the San Juan river. Indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities in the vicinity of the river were affected. As the flooding destroyed their subsistence crops, a total of 285 families (1619 individuals) - mainly children - became unable to secure food.
Context: The rural population of the Buenaventura municipality in Colombia lives along the banks of the river "San Juan." Flooding during the rainy season mainly affects the Bajo Sanjuan Malaguita and Cuella populations.
Humanitarian aid programme for displaced populations.
Reconstruction programme. During our first visit to Colombia in January 2011, Ecotechsy took stock of the extent of the damage done by the devastating floods since December 2010. Extensive flooding and landslides caused large-scale destruction to agriculture and habitation. Humanitarian work had just begun and the enormous task of reconstruction lay ahead. Ecotechsy is returning to the reconstruction projects planned for late last year. Although the rainy season is once again approaching, the Colombian government has done considerable work to reinforce many areas that are prone to flooding. It is in these regions that our reconstruction programme will take place.
Landmine awareness programme. Every year thousands of people around the world are maimed or killed by anti-personnel or explosive remnants of war (ERW). More than forty countries are polluted by these weapons. In addition to the terrible suffering inflicted on the victims, unexploded devices constitute a major obstacle to socio-economic development. They prevent the development of land, and maintain a climate of fear long after the conflict has ended.
